Easter Newsletter

3 April 2017 Celia Elissegaray

Congratulations to us all – we’ve made it to the end of term 1!

Renewals

It’s renewal time – many thanks to those who’ve already visited the website and followed the easy steps to join or renew membership  https://www.l3cta.org.au/wp/how-to-join-or-renew-membership.

Our Role

Great discussion at our recent workshop – do check the blog if you couldn’t attend in person, for a summary of Natalie’s presentation. This is a year of change with a new team in government and an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement coming up and our schools are busier than ever. The Association gives us all a voice as well as opportunities to network and support each other. Please make sure you are involved. Our organisation represents and showcases Level 3 Classroom Teachers and their work. Stories of your practice in schools demonstrate the wide reach and critical role of L3CTs in WA schools, improving teaching and learning through classroom practice and leadership in the school community. If you have been a L3CT for some years, how has the loss of the 0.1FTE affected your role? Please use the blog to share your views and practice with others.

Professional Learning

Check the website which is continually updating with new opportunities, often at reduced cost for our members. See https://www.l3cta.org.au/wp/professional-learning-opportunities.

L3CTA Workshop: Leading STEAM in Schools

Date: 10 June 2017
Time: 10 am
Venue: Magnesium Room, Scitech, West Perth

We’re delighted to be holding our next workshop at Scitech, giving our members a chance to find out what Scitech can offer them and their schools in a small, informal session with opportunities to ask questions and then explore the current exhibits. STEM/STEAM/DREAM and various other acronyms all reflect the current push to engage students in science and build their critical thinking skills across the curriculum. Learning integrated with science, in Primary and Secondary schooling, is critical. Finding resources and keeping ourselves fully skilled can be a challenge so it is always great to get new ideas and resources for teaching as well as an awareness of things on offer through incursions, excursions or resource packs than can help us.

Scitech’s Professional Learning team are experienced teachers in the STEM learning fields who model the latest in pedagogy and provide support to teachers with interactive workshops and classroom collaboration. Working across WA they also host events that feature leading-edge teaching practices and exemplary teachers. Come and hear more from Scitech educator Helen Oke about how Scitech can enrich your programs.

This workshop will be held at Scitech in the Magnesium Room at the bottom of the stairs. There is 1h free parking underneath and a café in the complex for a coffee before or after the meeting if you wish. Unlike our workshops in general, which require attendees to be current or joining members of the association, we invite L3CTA members to attend this workshop with a colleague from their school, with an interest in teaching science, who may not yet be a member of the L3CTA themselves. It’s a lovely chance to have a small ‘private view’ of Scitech’s programs. Please be sure to visit the website’s Events page  and RSVP.

Supporting others

We regularly receive requests for people to act as mentors for aspirant L3CTs. The Association provides opportunities for aspirants to meet and ask questions of experienced members, or to have a practice session before stage II. However many aspirants, if they don’t know a L3CT personally and have no-one in their locality, are very keen to have a little moral support in the early stages, someone to send an e-mail query to or meet up with for a chat. If you can help in this way it is greatly appreciated – don’t feel you have to provide extensive support or be an expert or L3 Assessor. Aspirants have usually sought multiple sources of support and have attended PL by the PLI or SSTUWA so have already had the correct information to start them off and are just looking for a little friendly personal encouragement. Please let us know on contact @l3cta.org.au if you are willing to be contacted by an aspirant to help in this way.

We wish all our members are very Happy Easter holiday.
